An hour and a half later, he was eyeing an empty lot.

The phone dinged. A text message.

18344 Yasen

The next cross street. A few minutes later he was looking at a small warehouse/office. Two vehicle bays and an office. Metal-sided, a little rust. Parking lot empty.

He walked up to the office door. Hit the buzzer and waited.

Finally reached and turned the knob. The door opened easily and he walked into a hall. The first open door on the left was to a room with a desk and a single chair, a bare and unused look to it. The next two were empty, then an open area with a small sink, fridge and coffee maker. A bathroom. A door to the outside; a weedy yard dropping off into what was probably a creek. A door to the vehicle bay.

And that was more interesting.

Closest to him, a motorcycle. Common make and model. Electric motor. On the floor next to it, a helmet, leather jacket, and an unfamiliar gadget, holding down a piece of paper.

Mike walked over, eyeing the box truck beyond. Ordinary. White, with a red flower in a circle logo. “Rose delivery” in black script across the bottom.

He stooped and picked up the paper.

The phone has a tracker that will point to the other phone. Sweep the car for bugs or locators the police or others might have placed on the car. Use the motorcycle, the jacket padding includes cash cards.

16001 Shadow Creek Drive is a safe house. Use it if needed.

Garage code 93845

Back door code 36294

If the safe house is discovered, use the warehouse. Same codes.

If you need to get off Home and hide for a year or more, there is a packet of information and ownership papers for one share on SKZ536, plus electronic measures and physical disguises in the truck. The back has a basic colonization load. Take it if you have to run.

No signature, of course.

He picked up the gadget. A long extension, dials and a screen. A detector of radio and/or microwave transmitters, perhaps?

He stuffed the detector in one of the motor cycle’s almost full panniers, and shrugged into the leather jacket.

He opened the truck door, and took a quick scan of the things there. The colony paperwork . . .

“I really, really, wish I knew who was helping us . . . and why.”

And if there is a tracker on the phone, “he” knows where they are already. So I guess I’ll just add myself to the catch, if anyone is hunting for us.

He mounted the motorcycle, found a remote control for the vehicle door, and headed out to find his family.
